EDC, among the first festivals to see the larger-than-life potential in a Las Vegas setting for rave culture, returns to “The Strip” this year, May 18th-20th, with one of the biggest lineups, featuring “more than 25 rare b2b performances, including Flux Pavilion b2b Doctor P, Solardo b2b CamelPhat, and 12th Planet b2b Kill the Noise.”
The festival which began as an underground rave thrown by Gary Richard and DJ Steve Kool-Aid in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, expanded to landmark venues like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Park over the next few years. In 2011, due to a controversy regarding a post-event overdose in 2010, EDC relocated to Las Vegas. By 2014, EDC Las Vegas was drawing upward of 700,000 ravers over the long weekend and by 2015, its reputation was such that tickets sold out before a lineup was even announced. In the years since its inception, EDC has spread to various cities around the world, with EDC now taking place in locations across the US as well as Mexico, the UK, Japan and India to name a few.
Despite its explosive growth, the emphasis remains the same: PLUR. In a 2017 interview, Insomniac’s Pasquale Rotella, who took over EDC in 1997, said, “What we do is create a community to bring people together. I love connecting with people personally. It’s so gratifying to hear, ‘I met someone at EDC five years ago, and I’ve scheduled for us to tie the knot at EDC this year.’ I don’t want to come across as too positive or cheesy, but it’s real. People need love. They want to connect. They want to be happy. I am trying to to deliver that opportunity, as much as I can.”
