5 Acts You Can’t Miss at Thrival Festival

Created by Thrill Mill, a nonprofit organization serving early stage entrepreneurs, this unique festival boasts a modest yet stellar lineup set against the industrial relics of Pittsburgh’s historic Carrie Furnaces. Now in it’s fourth and biggest year, Thrival Innovation + Music Festival will be hosting a wide variety of immersive programming throughout the week capped by two full days of live music on September 23-24. Here are five artists we’re excited to check out.

LETTUCE

Boston-based funk masters Lettuce have been cranking out slimy grooves since meeting at Berklee College of Music in 1992. Over the past decade, they’ve helped pioneer a resurgence of classic James Brown-era soul alongside artists like Sharon Jones and Galactic, securing their place as a staple at festivals around the world. The band’s members have worked with everyone from Lady Gaga to Wyclef Jean and they even hosted one of Bonnaroo’s legendary “Superjams”. Their set is guaranteed to be a non-stop party.

CHALK DINOSAUR

Pittsburgh local John O’Hallaron has been independently releasing his eclectic, funk-infused productions under the name Chalk Dinosaur since 2009. With 12 albums under his belt at only 27 years old, this young artist cranks out new music at a rapid pace and has shown no sign of slowing down. Do yourself a favor and check out his afternoon set this weekend before he makes his way to much larger stages next summer.

CHEAT CODES

Cheat Codes is a tropical house trio from Los Angeles, California whose recent single “Sex” was released on Casablanca Records earlier this year, adding to the millions of plays on Soundcloud, Spotify and YouTube the band has stacked up since their 2015 debut. Having honed their stage show playing for massive crowds while touring with The Chainsmokers, these guys are definitely a must see this weekend.

When / Where:  Saturday, September 24 at 2:15pm – Stage One

CAPPADONNA

As an integral part of the legendary Wu Tang Clan, Cappadonna has been recognized as the group’s unofficial tenth member since the beginning. His voice can be heard on hip hop classics like Raekwon’s “Ice Cream” and Ghostface Killah’s iconic Ironman  album, but his contributions to the group span across their entire catalog beginning with his first appearance on the multi-platinum Wu Tang Forever. This weekend, he’ll be joined on stage by Wu-affiliates Killarmy, WuLords, and Ezekial XI.

When / Where:  Saturday, September 24 at 3:05pm – Stage Two

HUDSON MOHAWKE

Hudson Mohawke is an electronic music wunderkind from Glasgow, Scotland who has taken the scene by storm since becoming the youngest turntablist to ever win the UK DMC Championship at age 15. He’s since released two albums on Warp Records along with an extensive selection of singles and remixes, but in 2012 his profile was raised tenfold when he was tapped by Kanye West. Signed as a producer under the superstar’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, Hud Mo contributed heavily to Cruel Summer , Yeezus , and this year’s smash hit The Life of Pablo.
